Rihanna: A True Fashion Icon

Rihanna is and has been a fashion icon for years. She has not only inspired trends, but designers too. “Her outfits tend to always stand out in a good way, she’s not afraid of what people will say.” (Mehak Amjed, Academy Senior) She is very fashion forward and has her own clothing line with Puma. Originally from the small island of Barbados, she began making music and soon rose to fame globally. At this point in her career, some may even say it’s Rihanna’s world and we’re just living in it.

As Rihanna continues to impact the fashion world with her iconic outfits, she has also managed to gain a  collaboration with the popular athletic wear brand Puma. Although Puma is not the first thing that pops into ones mind when thinking of a fashion forward line, Rihanna is quickly redefining the brand with her Fenty X Puma collaboration. According to Essence, the collaboration has been very successful especially since once the collection dropped, it sold out within hours and Puma has since seen a 40% increase in women’s shoe sales in the U.S. (Essence.com). On the Puma website, Puma describes their current collection as “sexy, powerful, expressive and opulent.” (Puma.com) Oversized and unisex clothing dominate the collection but still manage to provide a “sexy, powerful” look as Puma intended.

In today’s day and age where social media rules over both teens and adults alike, popular social media platforms such as Instagram have begun to influence fashion and makeup. A quick look through instagram’s explore tab will have one seeing trends which include sheer clothing, lingerie as outerwear and oversized clothing being worn by popular social media girls, all of which Rihanna has worn in the past. According to Mehak Amjed, an Academy senior, she even influences people at Academy with their own personal styles. She commented, “They probably don’t even like Rihanna that much but love her style.” Even celebrities take inspiration from Rihanna. For example, Kim Kardashian herself paired a shirt under a slip dress, which Rihanna had previously worn.

Not everyone can say that they are loved by several fashion designers however, Rihanna can. When designers speak of her, they speak with praise and love for the iconic singer and fashion influencer turned designer. For example, in a Vogue article, Alexander Wang said of her, “there is no one else that excites me more.” Also in the same article, Oliver Rousteing, the Creative Director of Balmain praised her when speaking of Rihanna saying that she is his muse and that when he asked her to do a campaign for Balmain, he wanted his brand to be everywhere and that since Rihanna is everywhere, it only made sense to choose her for the campaign. (Vogue.com) In 2014 Rihanna was even honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America as a fashion icon. (Essence.com) All the praise Rihanna has acquired through the years for her taste in fashion alone proves that she definitely knows what she is doing when it comes to fashion.

Overall, Robyn Rihanna Fenty has managed to influence people of all ages in a variety of ways. Many of the trends that teens are wearing today began with her. She is fearless in her fashion choices and is not afraid to show her personal style. Even at fashion shows and events, “she walks with so much confidence and she’s not afraid to do anything. She’s strong and brave and has inspired her fans to be the same.” (Mehak Amjed, Academy Senior) Rihanna herself once said “You will never be stylish if you don’t take risks.” (Vogue.com)

Rihanna has never been one to hold back with her style and at the 2017 Met Gala she definitely did not hold back. The fashion icon wore a Commes des Garçons outfit. The event was centered around the work of Rei Kawakubo, (the designer and founder of Commes des Garçon) and Rihanna was one of the few to be wearing one of his elaborate creations.
